Cord Wood Spiral Sculpture

As you can see I have my wood for the winter. This cordwood spiral was built for Sculpturefest 2008 in Woodstock, Vermont.
This piece was inspired by the spiral, a universal round shape. As we see cordwood it is always in a straight line. I wanted to make an interesting shape and chose the round spiral. It is the cordwood that incorporates this shape into every day life.
The whole piece took 5 weeks to build. I began with the 12ft vertical in the center. How it stays up right, is a secret and will reveal itself upon a closer look.
Each piece is tapered with a chainsaw to produce a tight circle and each piece slightly slopes downward.
To my surprise it was as much appreciated by people walking inside as outside.
I will dismantle the spiral in July and use the same wood to build a new design for Sculpturefest 2009.

I think this is a pretty cool idea. It looks like you put a lot of time and planning into the design. The tall part in the middle reminds me of a stone built castle tower. I can’t wait to see the next sculpture.

This piece of natural art is truly beautiful to see in person. I highly recommend seeing this one of a kind work of art.

SculptureFest is one of the things that makes Woodstock special. Strolling across the rolling hills on a beautiful summer afternoon while viewing beautiful works of art is inspiring. I am intrigued by the unique cordwood sculptures you have created. I look forward to them every year. When will we see a cordwood chessboard?

I love the piece thank you. Where can I see images of other pieces you have created? I’m facinated by the wood chord and what can be achieved with the form and the material. I’d like to build a chord round house.
